A somewhat longer route through the Wendbach to the Hohe Dirn. This round covers 22.2 kilometers and 891 meters of altitude gain.
Directions:The trail starts at the train station in Trattenbach. We run along the street to the left, passing the large Taschenfeitel, after 1.6 kilometers we reach the entrance to the Wendbachtal. Slightly ascending, we run along the forest road until at kilometer 3.5 we turn left into the forest. A path takes us up to the Hintsteiner farm below the Reitnerkogel. We keep right and run along the forest road of Hintsteingraben. At kilometer 6.3 it then goes very steeply up a trail; stamina and sure-footedness are required up to the Dirnsteinboden. Here we then turn right onto the Hohe Dirn. After a few minutes, we stand on the summit with a summit cross and a wonderful view of the Enns valley. We take the same way back until we are again at Dirnsteinboden; here we now run down the forest road towards Mösern. At a junction just above, a signpost shows us “Wendtbach Trattenbach HD8.” Again at a large junction, we run along the street keeping to the right until we come out of the forest at the Hubertus chapel. From here, we continue on the paved Kienberg street. At kilometer 19.5, we run to the right at Unterpermessner and not left towards Trattenbach. Here a path turning left leads us down to the Goldgrub main street, which we had already run at the beginning. From here, it is not far to our starting point.
Equipment:The required equipment always depends on the respective route and the weather conditions. Regarding provisions: This is very individual, and it is advisable to have more rather than less with you for both equipment and food. A 5 km round in the valley requires less than a demanding route in the mountains. The weather can change quickly, and if you are not constantly moving or need to take a break, warm clothing is of great importance, for example.
We have a general checklist here for you:
Weather-appropriate running clothes for the respective season – weather forecast – region – altitude. These include, among others: * a waterproof rain jacket * waterproof rain pants suitable for running * gloves and warm headgear (cap/headband/scarf) * sunglasses + sunscreen + headgear for very warm days
Trail running shoes
Water bottles, soft flasks or a hydration bladder with enough liquid for the respective route (possibly also salt tablets/magnesium)
Snacks for an energy boost in between: energy bars, gels, chocolate, trail mix,
Running backpack: ideally a trail running vest / a trail running backpack or a waist belt for short routes.
Drypack: to keep your valuables or change of clothes dry (optionally a small trash bag)
Emergency blanket
Small first aid kit. An Israeli bandage is, in my opinion, highly recommended: it is a one-handed operated wound and pressure dressing. You can find details here.
Emergency whistle (often integrated into the trail backpack)
Mobile phone
Maps (online and/or offline)
E-card or insurance card
Some cash
Crampons/spikes: these can be a great advantage in winter and icy conditions.
Folding poles for trail running
Headlamp
