Hike to the Schlögen Danube view

The Danube region of Upper Austria is home to one of the most famous and beautiful postcard motifs in Austria - the Schlögener Schlinge. Here, the Danube winds elegantly and sinuously through the landscape and makes every hiker on the Donausteig stop for a photo. The best view of the Danube loop is from the Schlögener Blick viewpoint. This rarity - known as the ‘epigenetic breakthrough valley’ - was formed when the Danube carved out its meandering bed in the soft layers of the Tertiary period and later had to maintain it on the hard granite rock. Due to the subsequent uplift of the land mass, the Danube dug itself almost 300 metres deep, creating the narrow valley that forms almost a complete circle in the Schlögener Schlinge.
