The jewel in Upper Austria ...
Since 1218, members of the Premonstratensian Order have been living and working here at the foot of the Bohemian Forest. It was founded by St. Norbert of Xanten in 1121.
collegiate Church
The Gothic collegiate church has three naves and impresses with a large staircase to the high choir. Altars, pulpit and choir stalls from the 17th and 18th centuries contain rich carving and intarsia work and give the church a warm, inviting atmosphere. Here guests expect tradition and open-mindedness, pastoral commitment and spiritual ambience. Of the 3 organs, the Putz organ from 1634 is one of the most important organs in Austria. The Schlägler Organ Concerts enjoy great popularity every year.
Treasures from centuries old tradition
The Romanesque and Gothic crypt testify to the early days of the monastery. The collegiate church, built in the Gothic style above, was later furnished in Baroque style. Valuable liturgical devices and parameters from various centuries are kept in the sacristy. The extensive new library testifies to the importance of science and study for the monastery. The impressive collection includes more than 60,000 books and numerous early prints and manuscripts. The Schlägl Abbey also has an extensive collection of paintings with valuable gothic panel paintings as well as a portraits collection of almost all the confreres from 1802 that is unique in this form.
