Salzgasse mit "Reiha"
Freistadt, Oberösterreich, Österreich

- All weather
If you walk through the city with your eyes open, you will discover small, mostly wooden doors between the individual houses. There are also a few of them here in Salzgasse. At house no. 20, you can take a look inside and guess what purpose these gaps, which the people of Freistadt call "Reiher" or "Reichn", served back then.
Any ideas? The answer is as simple as it is unimaginable today: it's about the toilet facilities. From both houses, the so-called "Abrittserker" with the outhouses went out into these interspaces. What the hygienic conditions were likein the historic town at that time is left to your imagination. In any case, there are two documented plague outbreaks with over 100 deaths each. Not everything was better in the good old days... But now to the place where the oldest building in the city stood!
