On the way to the city's landmark, the Linzertor, Salzgasse is called Eisengasse from the junction. Salt and iron played an important role in the city's development.
The clearly recognisable firewalls, which were intended to protect the roofs from the spread of the flames, are impressive. After the two devastating town fires, which destroyed the town just nine years apart in 1507 and 1516, the people of Freistadt obtained tax relief to enable them to rebuild more quickly. In returnIn return, new building measures were imposed in order to be better protected from a fire catastrophe. The Innsbruck-style firewalls inspired some citizens to pretend to have an additional storey (Tips House). But it was all just a façade!
