SPIRITUAL HIKING ON THE DONAUSTEIG:
Mauthausen lies on the Way of St. James Upper Austria. east-west - north route.
"Blessed are the people who set out to discover the world with their feet".
St. Hedwig (mystic), she was on pilgrimage barefoot from northern Germany to Rome. Even today, the Hedwigsbründl in Mauthausen is a reminder of her.
When I go on pilgrimage, I can get my feet back on the ground, ground myself anew and thus gain support and stability. My feet have traction and carry me through life, every step - so that something GOES on.
When I walk, the pilgrim structure is already with me at every step:Breaking up - leaving the old - as one foot detaches itself from the ground and begins a new step.
Being on the way - in the rolling of the foot.
Arriving - by the whole foot being in contact with the ground.
- Consciously touching the ground with the feet - heel to ball toe
- Feeling how the ground feels under my feet
- Feel how the feet feel on this floor
- Foot care, walking barefoot again and again and feeling the soft meadow floor
- Massaging the feet.
Directions:
From the starting place in Mauthausen (Pragstein Castle) we hike upstream and take a turn towards Marktplatz square. We take a left turn and climb up to the parish church. We pass the church and keep to the left (Kirchenberg, then “Am Brunnenberg“ and Brunngraben). There we meet Donausteig Trail and follow it against the direction given by the signposts. We leave Donausteig Trail in a forest section and follow the road back to Mauthausen. We pass a cemetery and get to a first settlement before we hike down to Mauthausen. We keep to the left at the parish church and walk down Kirchenberg hill. We keep the direction and take a right turn at Heinrichskirchenweg to get back to our starting point.
Tip:
120-year-old protected plane trees at the market fountain in the centre of Mauthausen. Pragstein Castle with Museum of local history and pharmaceutics. Listed townhouses at Leopold Heindl-Kai. Pillory and Romanesque ossuary. Gothic parish church to St. Nicholas.
