Paths covering:
An exciting journey through cultural history from Linz to the Strudengau region.
From the Celtic period in the Celtic village of Mitterkirchen to the late Middle Ages at Greinburg Castle and the modern age in the provincial capital of Linz.Directions:
The tour starts at the main square of Linz. Over the Nibelungen Bridge you reach the north bank and along the Danube Cycle Path you now go downstream.
Past Steyregg, a name all lovers of castles should remember, to St. Georgen an der Gusen. To do this, leave the Danube cycle path to the left at Abwinden, which ends here anyway due to the waterworks, and cycle parallel to the railroad tracks into St. Georgen. As soon as you reach the L569, turn right in the direction of Langenstein. After a winding ride through the village of Ufer, you finally come back onto the cycle path at Mauthausen and thus very close to the Danube.
Continue on the Danube cycle path to Au an der Donau. Here the tour branches off onto the Machlandradweg. This leads via the district capital of Perg along the Naarn River to Mitterkirchen im Machland. After a stop in the Celtic village of Mitterkirchen, the trail leads back into the hinterland. Via Klam (Clam Castle) you reach Bad Kreuzen with its striking castle.
The route now continues behind the Danube again to the picturesque town of Grein. Here again a late medieval castle awaits you (Greinburg Castle).
From Grein you will now return to the provincial capital Linz on the Danube Cycle Path. It is worth making a detour to Baumgartenberg. Not only the former collegiate church is worth seeing here, but also the coat of arms of Upper Austria has its origin in Baumgartenberg.
In Mauthausen we make a detour with the Danube bike ferry to the south bank to Enns, the oldest city in Austria. On the Anton Bruckner Weg we reach St. Florian, the impressive monastery of St. Florian is a place of pilgrimage known beyond the borders of Austria.
The Anton Bruckner Weg now leads us back to the Danube and in Abwinden we change banks again before heading back to Linz.
Tip:It is recommended to plan the tour for two days with an overnight stay. You can find bike-friendly establishments along the Danube Cycle Path here.
The real Linz cake is baked at the Jindrak confectionery in Linz's Herrenstraße.
