During this relatively short stage, you hike through an enchanting Salzburg valley, where the namesake Lake Hintersee invites you to take a longer break (which might include swimming).
Directions:
In Faistenau, walk southwest along Bramsaustraße following the trail marker “Zum Hintersee” to Bramsau-Bräu. The route continues along the Kugelberg-Rundweg Trail through the Almbach Valley to Rosenlehen. Immediately afterwards, you will arrive once again at Hinterseestraße, but you only follow it to the right for 120 metres. Then turn right on Seestraße to hike to the nearby Lake Hintersee (688 m). The route continues to the left on the lakeshore path, past the Lago Bar, along the northern shore to the Hirschpoint swimming area (kiosk) and then briefly along the road. After the Taugl Bridge, fork right to the southern shore and there turn left onto a forest road. Hiking along this road for 800 m, you will come to a fork. If you go right, you can make a detour to a lovely ice chapel (avalanche remains from last winter). The trip there and back is approximately 50 minutes. To the left, the path continues to the main road which is crossed again. Then the trail leads onward for approximately 3 kilometres through the forest and into the valley alongside the lively mountain waters of the Taugl. After the bridge over the Ladenbach Stream, turn right to arrive in the village of Hintersee (746 m). 1:00 h
Safety guidelines:
- In alpine terrain, be aware of the danger of falling rocks.
- Through early summer, you may encounter steep snowfields or firn gullies – especially during icy conditions, there is an acute risk of falling and thus fatal injury!
- Due to storm damage, forestry work or construction work, individual trail sections may be difficult or impassable at times.
- Cows in the alpine meadows are often curious. Because they are nursing mothers, they develop a strong tendency to protect their calves. Therefore, move through cow pastures quietly, keep at least 20 metres of distance to the animals and never pet calves! In the case of threatening behaviour (pawing, stamping) slowly back away (do not turn your back). Keep dogs on a leash. They must not bark at or chase cows. In the case of an attack, the dog must be released from the leash.
Equipment:
For all stages, you will need hiking or mountain boots with treaded rubber soles as well as wind- and rainproof clothing. A change of clothes and a small first-aid kit should also be included in your backpack. The amount of provisions you should pack depends on the number of available rest stops. In any case, you should always take along plenty to drink. Telescopic poles are helpful, especially when walking downhill.
