River cycling along the Alpine river Inn and the mythic river Danube. You travel relaxedly through the last breakthrough valley of the Inn and the European protected area Upper Danube and Aschach valley. The route leads to cultural treasures, such as the baroque town Schärding and the three-rivers city Passau. On the return leg, you cross the rural Sauwald plateau with a magnificent panoramic descent to Wernstein.
Highlights:
- Baroque town Schärding (Austria’s most beautiful baroque town)
- Cultural gem Passau (three-rivers city, residence city of the "Danube East" ...)
- UNESCO World Heritage Site: Roman Museum Kastell Boiotro
- Vornbach Gorge with nature reserve
- Panoramic descent to Wernstein
Schärding – Austria’s most beautiful baroque town is a picturesque starting point. Located at the legendary Alpine river Inn, the riverside with its own city gate, city wall, colorful burgher houses... tells of prosperity as a river trading place. A genuine river gem! From the riverside, you follow the broad Inn stream – one of the longest and mightiest Alpine rivers – downstream. Once this was an important trade route between Tyrol and the Danube, today it serves as the border river to Bavaria. After the Pram bridge, you cycle on sandy paths through rustic riverside woods next to the stream. Relaxed pedaling, hidden views of the Inn... river cycling at its finest! After the wide Inn valley, the last breakthrough valley of the Alpine river begins with the Bavarian monastery Vornbach. The entrance is the nature reserve "Vornbach Gorge": In the idyllic forest gorge, the Inn forces its way through a 60 m narrow gorge! No wonder they say that you once could hear the Inn's debris "singing" here.
The bike route briefly climbs a narrow terrain step above the river. On paved bike paths, lonely secondary roads, a sandy path, and finally the Inn street, you reach the end of the gorge, the artful Marian footbridge in Wernstein! The 145 m long suspension bridge over the Inn is supported by a single(!) 30 m high pillar and from its middle offers a magnificent view into the gorge. The Bavarian castle Neuburg reigns over the scenery. Pure river romance! After Wernstein, the breakthrough valley becomes wider and lonelier. Wonderful mixed forests shape the valley flanks. The Neuburg forest on the Bavarian side is known for tree giants up to 50 m high and its species diversity – a natural jewel! You relaxedly accompany the slow river on sand roads. The ease of cycling gives space for daydreams.
Civilization begins again in the rural area of Ingling and via secondary roads you head to the cultural highlight – the three-rivers city Passau! Inn and Ilz flow into the Danube here. The medieval Inn city tells of flourishing trade, the magnificent old town on the peninsula opposite of Gloria, power, and wealth as the residence city of the "Danube East"! The UNESCO World Heritage Site "Roman Museum Kastell Boiotro" is dedicated to reviving life on the Danube limes. Passau is a cultural gem with many facets! So, be sure to plan time for exploration. After the mouth of the Inn into the Danube, you follow the mythic river a bit through the Upper Danube valley – one of the longest breakthrough valleys of the Danube at over 90 km (!) – and with rare gorge and hillside mixed forests, a natural jewel of central European dimension. In Haibach, you leave the urban area and cycle further on the Danube bike path.
After the Austrian border, the 180-meter ascent begins onto the Sauwald plateau. The first section leads in shady mixed forest in switchbacks through the steep valley flank, then it goes uphill over a ridge through rural cultural landscape. At Gasthof Blass, a resting place of the Danube trail impresses with an unusual view of Passau. Shortly after, you stand in Freinberg on the Sauwald plateau. Congratulations! Now begins enjoyable highland cycling on rural roads in the rhythm of hills. Lush meadows, fertile fields, scattered farms, small forests, small settlements... pure rural idyll! Beautiful views provide elevation experience. In the rural settlement Schafberg, the plateau is crossed and a dreamy panoramic descent leads back into the Inn valley – to Wernstein. You already know the rest of the return route. Feel the primal power of the currents!
Tip:Explorations with a delightful stopover! This route passes directly by the following culinary partner:
Safety guidelines:
The majority of this pleasure bike route uses quiet, paved bike paths, (secondary) streets, and farm roads. Between Schärding and Passau, longer sections run on well-ridable sand roads. Basic gear shifting technique is an advantage for the long uphill ride. Basic braking technique is necessary for the long panoramic descent.
Signage:
To make orientation easier for you, the Danube bike rounds have been marked with their own cycling guidance system. This route follows the signage "R1.01 Inn-Danube-Round".
Special note:
Attention! Border crossing Upper Austria – Bavaria near Passau. Don’t forget your passport!

Lukas Kienbauer has been involved in the culinary Innviertel since 2016. His culinary concepts are known far beyond the borders of Austria. In 2021, the 32-year-old Schärding 4-hood chef added a third restaurant in the old town of Schärding to his "Lukas Restaurant" and the "Lukas Steak".
The many unique elements in Lukas Izakaya are not just details, they make the overall picture perfect. Natural shapes and colours, paired with Japanese style elements, create an incomparably harmonious ambience.
Izakaya translates as "sac shop to sit in" and combines bar and restaurant.
That's why our restaurant is divided into two areas.
At the bar we prepare our Japanese surprise menus "Omakase" and share our knowledge at sushi workshops and cooking classes.
In the restaurant area you will be served nigiri, sashimi and special rolls every first and third Thursday of the month in our "Sushi Night".
For your individual celebration, the entire restaurant with all its possibilities is at your disposal.
Come by and see for yourself.
Event location
"The demand for exclusivity, for unique experiences is constantly increasing on the part of our guests, and we want to take this into account with the new Lukas Izakaya".
In future, the Lukas Izakaya will develop into an event location with individual possibilities for celebrations of all kinds. The Japanese-inspired concept and the unique atmosphere of the restaurant will remain. "We don't want a revolution, but an evolution". The same applies to events, which will be individually tailored to the wishes of the guests. Whether a wedding, Christmas or exclusive company party, a birthday with DJ, wine tasting or a flying dinner - many things are feasible.
Until now, due to the regular opening hours of Lukas Izakaya, we could usually only offer such events on closing days. In future, customers can choose their preferred day - whether during the week or at the weekend.
Finally, we have the necessary flexibility that we do not have with Lukas Restaurant and Lukas Steak due to their size alone. Our goal is to make the right offer for the guest.
SEE. SMELL. TASTE. FEEL.
This is exactly what you can do in our entire restaurant.
Take a seat at one of the 24 seats in the restaurant area and enjoy the view of the open kitchen.
You are sure to experience an unforgettable evening at our chef's table - exclusively for 2 people only, it is located right next to the kitchen! Here you can sit slightly elevated next to each other and watch the chefs live as they prepare and serve the dishes, so to speak "enjoyment first row foot-free"!
You have something to celebrate or simply want to be undisturbed? Our Séparée offers the perfect opportunity. A private setting for up to 12 people at a long table. Ideal for small groups, celebrations or meetings!
Without a menu - but with a lot of feeling. You won't find a menu here. Instead, we enquire about intolerances and specialities when you make your reservation. We use this information and the seasonally available products to create your personal menu.
We cook what nature and the season have to offer. What we get from the region, we take from the region. However, we are not closed to influences from all over the world. Many of the herbs and plants we use for our dishes come from our own garden. We collect nettles, spruce tops and elder from secluded places in nature. If something is not available in the appropriate quality, there is an alternative. We refuse to use products that do not meet our quality standards The food is the star and is always our focus. Enjoyment can be that simple!
Of course, an excellent menu must be accompanied by finely coordinated drinks. But it doesn't always have to be wine. Our non-alcoholic beverage accompaniment is in no way inferior. In addition to our extensive range of wines, we also serve you non-alcoholic drinks that we have painstakingly crafted to accompany your meal.
Lukkas Kienbauer's gastronomic empire began in March 2016 when he opened his first restaurant, "Lukas Restaurant", on Unterer Stadtplatz in Schärding. Shortly afterwards, in summer 2018, the 4-toque chef expanded his culinary world with "Lukas Steak" on Oberer Stadtplatz and in spring 2021, the opening of his Japanese-inspired restaurant "Lukas Izakaya" was just around the corner. That's how quickly the Schärdinger had expanded his gastronomic world to 3 restaurants in his younger years.
Reservations for the restaurant, which has a limited capacity of 24 seats, can be made on 0664/3413285 or by email to: lukas@lukas-restaurant.at

EXTRAORDINARY DISHES COMBINED WITH DELICIOUS WINES
Regionality plays a particularly important role in her cuisine. This starts with the selection of products and continues through to the finished dish. However, they do not close themselves off from the big wide world of flavours.
Das Römermuseum Kastell Boiotro befindet sich in einem spätmittelalterlichen Haus, das auf den Fundamenten des Kastells Boiotro ruht.

In the Baumgartner Brauerei Stüberl - affectionately known as the "Bums'n" - people don't just sit next to each other, but get together, share stories and laugh about anecdotes that have characterised the house for generations. The Bums'n is a place full of warmth, where life and community are celebrated. "Young and old come together here, the banker sits next to the labourer and the travelling troupe next to the employee," says Helmut Schuster with a smile - a real "living room" for the town and its visitors, because a feeling of home and togetherness is conveyed here. Once you enter the Bums'n, you become part of a living history made up of encounters, shared laughter and an appreciation of genuine, unadulterated cuisine.
The Bums'n has been a permanent fixture in Schärding for over a century. The listed building has a long history dating back to 1609, when Baumgartner beer was first brewed here. Helmut Schuster, who started as head waiter at the inn 21 years ago, took over the traditional business, which has been known as the "zur Bums'n" pub since 1946, together with his business partner Herbert Unger in 2013. The somewhat unusual name comes from a time when beer barrels were still delivered by carriage. They rolled over the sloping wooden floor of the pub and "banged" against the bar. These noises were memorised by the locals and this is how the pub got its unmistakable name, which still stands for it today. What else is unmistakable about the Bums'n? The aroma of roast meat in the Rein, warm Leberkäs with crispy Salzstangerl and the famous goulash that greets you as soon as you come near the inn - if you want to experience typical Innviertel cuisine, the Bums'n is the place to be! The Surrahmschnitzel in malt beer sauce and crisp, fresh salads round off the menu. The dishes reflect the love of hearty cuisine and make the restaurant a real culinary meeting place.
For the Bums'n team, regionality is paramount - many ingredients and products are sourced directly from the surrounding area. For Helmut and Herbert, the conscious decision to use regional products is not only a question of quality, but also an expression of their close connection to their homeland. The direct location of the inn in the baroque town, coupled with its proximity to the Inn and the loving preservation of old traditions, means that the connection to the Danube region can be felt in every corner of the house.
The rustic vaulted ceiling on the ground floor and the cosy guest garden invite you to relax with a cool Baumgartner beer after a hike or a cycle tour along the many cycle paths, such as the Inn-Donau-Runde or the Pram-Sauwald-Tour, to relax. The Inn Cycle Path, which leads directly through Schärding, also offers a wonderful route before a stop at the inn. Once you have visited the Bums'n, you will always want to come back - whether for the food, the get-together or simply to enjoy a good beer.
