The cultural capital Linz is the starting point for this Donausteig stage. It lies on the northern edge of the urban Linz basin and is divided by the Danube. There has always been an important Danube crossing here, which gave Linz significance and prosperity. From the magnificent main square, we first walk over the historic Nibelungen bridge to Urfahr. Then we follow the Danube downstream along the Treppelweg. Numerous cultural highlights allow us to experience the “cultural capital,” and the Danube shows us its qualities as an urban recreational area. In the Danube bend, which probably gave Linz its name, we leave the river and hike through the floodplain to the Pleschinger Lake. Shortly after this popular bathing lake, our summit assault begins. Via a rural side road, we quickly ascend. At first through forest, then through a wonderful rural cultural landscape. With increasing altitude, a contrasting view fascinates us over the urban Linz basin: perfect rural idyll against the backdrop of the Linz industrial area – simply fantastic! At the Donausteig rest stop “Pfenningberg/Linz view,” one can wonderfully reflect on city and country in front of this unique scenery. Shortly afterwards, the summit forest begins, and forest roads take us higher. Via a detour, we finally reach the forest summit of the Pfenningberg. Congratulations – we are standing here on one of the seven Donausteig summits! A few meters northwest of the summit cross, a forest clearing allows us a hidden view back to the Nibelungen bridge and the old town of Linz. The descent leads over forest roads to the Donausteig rest stop “Mühlviertel view” on the northern edge of the summit forest. Here the Mühlviertel mountain region reveals itself in all its beauty: meadows, fields, forest patches, farmsteads, small shrines... – pure Mühlviertel idyll! Via farm roads and field paths, we hike through this traditional rural cultural landscape in a long right bend down to the wooded Reichenbach valley. The meanders of the lonely Reichenbach then lead us past the Donausteig rest stop “Reichenbach/Devil’s Chapel” into the rural village of Pulgarn at the beginning of the Danube plain. Here, the faded splendor of the former Pulgarn monastery leads us to reflect on impermanence and values in life. Through the rural scattered settlement, we walk out to the fertile Danube plain to the old main road. We now follow this for about 2 km north into the historic small town of Steyregg. A Donausteig stage full of landscape contrasts and hidden gems – simply beautiful!

Directions:From the Linz main square we cross the Nibelungen Bridge on the right side to Urfahr. In front of the Ars Electronica Center, a “hidden” descent for pedestrians and cyclists leads us right down to the Danube promenade. We then follow this downstream. After a few meters, we pass the Donausteig starting point “Linz”. Later, we go under the railway bridge and the highway bridge until the Donausteig turns left into the Pleschinger Au after the Danube bend (shipyard on the opposite Danube side). In a left curve, we reach a flood dam. We continue right along this. After about 600 m, we leave the dam on the left and circle the Pleschinger Lake on the north side (near the waterline) until a footpath takes us left to the parking lot. There we cross the bridge and then walk along the street right to Pleschinger Landesstraße. Here right and after about 50 m immediately left again. Now an asphalt road takes us first through a forest and then through rural cultural landscape uphill to the Donausteig rest stop “Pfenningberg/Linz view”. We continue hiking uphill on the road, take the next fork (second four-sided farm) left, and reach a junction at the forest edge after the next forest section. Now left uphill back into the forest. Shortly after, the asphalt road follows the forest edge and becomes a dirt road. Here the summit forest of the Pfenningberg also begins. At the next fork, left uphill, we then stand at a Y-junction. From here, a detour on the left leads us to the summit of the Pfenningberg. We hike the forest road uphill until another forest road joins from the left. We follow this for about 100 m south, then a footpath takes us to the summit of the Pfenningberg. From the Y-junction, right leads us slightly up and down to the Donausteig rest stop “Mühlviertel view” (located a bit off the road at the forest edge). A few meters later, the road leaves the summit forest. The Donausteig now immediately turns left (still before the Gasthaus Daxleitner) and leads down the hill via a meadow path to an asphalt road. We follow this left over the hill northwards and turn right at the next crossroads (after the four-sided farm on the right side). Past a riding facility, the asphalt road descends to the next farm. Shortly before, we turn right onto a gravel road and follow it through a forest patch down to the hamlet Holzwinden. At the T-junction with the village road, left and after 80 m immediately right again. Downhill along a field path, through a short forest section, and left past a large four-sided farmstead, we reach the next T-junction. Here right and just before the next farm left via a field path down to the Reichenbach. We follow its left bank downstream, past the Donausteig rest stop “Reichenbach/Devil's Chapel” into the village Pulgarn. There we follow the village road in a “square” S-curve out into the Danube plain to the railway line. Before the tracks, we walk about 1.5 km along the old federal highway towards Steyregg. In Steyregg, we turn right at the first opportunity and reach the Seilertor (old city gate) in a long left curve. Along the outside of the city wall to the left, we finally come to the Donausteig starting point “Steyregg”.

Tip:Linz is the cultural highlight on the Donausteig – you should definitely take your time for it! Uniquely, the city also offers exciting opportunities to combine hiking enjoyment with cultural events. Simply fantastic!

Hallenwald und Zimmermänner…
Der montane Buchen-(Tannen-Fichten-Misch-)wald ist der natürliche Hauptwaldtyp in der Region. Wie große Hallen erscheinen einem die hochwüchsigen Wälder. Durch Nutzungsintensivierung und Umwandlung in Fichtenforste war und ist dieser Waldtyp gefährdet. Naturnahe Mischwälder gibt es deshalb leider kaum mehr. Eine Ausnahme ist der Großraum um Linz. Großflächige, wüchsige, buchendominierte Wälder konnten sich hier in Großwaldbesitzungen und Bauernwäldern erhalten. In den Großwäldern fehlt die historische Übernutzung und so stellen sie wertvolle Reste dieses Waldtypes dar. Im Unterwuchs finden sich Hainsimse, Wald-Habichtskraut und Mauerlattich. Altholzreiche Bucheninseln sind z.B. wichtig für den Schwarzspecht, der seine Wohnung gerne in freistehende Buchen zimmert.
Am Pfenningberg trieben sich einst viele Wölfe herum. Wie eines Nachts ein Schneider noch mal mit dem Leben davongekommen ist, als er einem Wolf begegnete, erzählt die Donau-Sage "Der mit dem Wolf geigt".

Gefährdete Kulturlandschaft...
Im Mühlviertel stehen sich reich gegliederte Kulturlandschaften und strukturarme agrarische Plateaus gegenüber. Flächendeckende Flurbereinigungen und Zusammenlegungen führten zu einer Veränderung der Landschaft. Die Landwirtschaft wurde intensiver. Das ungebremst weitergehende Bauernsterben verschärft die Problematik. Doch es gibt eine hohe Teilnahme an den Förderprogrammen. Der Anteil der Biobauern ist hoch. Verschiedene Initiativen setzen auf Naturvermittlung. Eine hohe Biodiversität wird durch eine hohe Landschaftsgliederung erhalten, in der ein Lebensraummosaik entstehen kann. Wiesen und Äckerränder, Raine an Besitzgrenzen, kleine Gehölzgruppen, Lüsse (Streifenflur), Streuobstwiesen, Hecken und Böschungen tragen zur Artenvielfalt bei und erfreuen das Auge des Wanderers.
Am Pfenningberg, so sagt man, lebt der Hehe-Mann, welcher einen kostbaren Goldschatz bewacht. Was passiert, wenn man den Hehe-Mann verärgert, erzählt die Donau-Sage "Nix Hehe!".
Endangered cultural landscape...
In the Mühlviertel, richly structured cultural landscapes contrast with structurally poor agricultural plateaus. Comprehensive land consolidation and mergers led to a change in the landscape. Agriculture became more intensive. The unchecked decline of farmers is exacerbating the problem. However, there is a high level of participation in the support programmes. The proportion of organic farmers is high. Various initiatives are focussing on nature education. A high level of biodiversity is maintained through a high degree of landscape organisation, in which a mosaic of habitats can develop. Meadows and field margins, borders along property boundaries, small groups of trees and shrubs, meadows, orchards, hedges and embankments contribute to biodiversity and delight the eye of the hiker.
It is said that the Hehe man lives on the Pfenningberg, guarding a precious treasure of gold. The Danube legend "Nix Hehe!" tells the story of what happens if you annoy the Hehe man.

Kurvige Bäche und gelbe Drachen…
Ein Bach, der seiner Natur folgend, mäandrieren (sich schlängeln) darf und von einer natürlichen Vegetation begleitet wird, ist leider schon etwas Seltenes. Umso mehr darf man sich darüber freuen, ist er nicht nur angenehm für das Auge, sondern auch wichtiger Lebensraum. Es kommt zu Pralluferbildungen, die mögliche Niststätten für den Eisvogel bieten. In Gegenwart naturnaher Bäche und Wälder fühlt sich auch der Feuersalamander wohl. Seinen Namen hat er von einem alten Aberglauben, er könne Brände löschen, was zu seiner Verfolgung führte. Heute freut sich der aufmerksame Wanderer, wenn er bei Regenwetter einen der kleinen Drachen zu Gesicht bekommt, ist er doch auch schon durch Lebensraumverlust bedroht.
In Steyregg lebte einst eine Bäuerin, bei der es selbst für die Dienstboten jeden Tag (auch Wochentags) das beste Essen gab. Das war sonderbar, warf der Hof doch gar nicht so viel ab, wie sie verteilte - ein Knecht kam hinter ihr Geheimnis. Die Donau-Sage "Spei Butter und Fleisch!" erzählt die ganze Geschichte.

Zu Wasser und am Lande…
Sie waren die ersten Wirbeltiere, die vor etwa 350-400 Millionen Jahren das Land eroberten – die Amphibien. Ihr Name kommt aus dem griechischen: amphibios = doppellebig und zeugt von ihrer sowohl an das Wasser, als auch an das Land gebundenen Lebensweise. In Österreich kommen Froschlurche und Schwanzlurche vor. Einige faszinierende Amphibienarten haben sich Linz als Lebensraum ausgesucht. Die Rotbauchunke etwa, ist eigentlich eine Bewohnerin der Auwälder Ostösterreichs und kommt in Oberösterreich nur in den Linzer Donauauen vor. Die Brachflächen im Industriegebiet sind die Heimat der vom Aussterben bedrohten Wechselkröte. Wasserfrosch, Laubfrosch und Donaukammmolch gesellen sich zu der illustren Runde.
"Das Wasser klärt sich..." wenn es rinnt. Der Mensch klärt sich, indem er geht. Eine schöne Überlieferung erzählt vom Befreien von unnötigen Lasten.

1482 Steyregg wird zur Stadt erhoben.
1908 – 1909 Bau des heutigen Amtsgebäudes als „Kaiser-Jubiläums-Gemeindehaus“.
1964 Das Kinderbad an der Stadtmauer wird eröffnet.
1970 Die neue Volksschule Steyregg wird bezogen.
1972 Der Hauptschulneubau ist fertig.
1979 Die neue Donaubrücke ist nach nur 3-jähriger Bauzeit fertig.
1982 Steyregg feiert „700 Jahre Markt“ und „500 Jahre Stadt“.
1998 Die Pleschinger Austernbank wird zum Naturschutzgebiet erklärt.
2004 Das neue Sport- und Freizeitzentrum südlich der neuen B3 ist fertig gestellt. Damit bekommt der Sportverein Steyregg eine neue Heimat, die Kleingartenanlage wird bezogen und der neue Badesee nimmt seinen Betrieb auf.
Tipp
Schloss Steyregg: Ehrwürdig liegt das Schloss Steyregg über den Dächern der Stadt. Es ist das Wahrzeichen der kleinen Stadt und wurde der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht.
In Steyregg gab es einst eine unheimliche Wirtin - die Leute wussten nicht recht, was sie von ihr halten sollten, bis eines Tages der Baß-Bertl ein unmögliches Ereignis beobachtete... Mehr dazu in der Donau-Sage "Die Wirtin, die Hex!".

The starting point of this stage is the Linz main square (GPS: A-4020 Linz, Hauptplatz).
Public Transit
Linz can be reached by train and bus. A return transfer from Steyregg is also possible by train and bus. When traveling by train, it should be noted that both train stations are at a greater distance from the respective town center (main square) – so bus rides or longer walks must also be planned! Information about departure times can be found at http://www.ooevv.at .
Parking
There is no parking available at the main square; the surrounding area is a large paid short-term parking zone. Unlimited and free parking is possible on the grounds of the Urfahraner Market (about 15 minutes' walk from the main square; watch out for closures due to market operation – see info at www.urfahranermarkt.at ). Within 10 minutes' walking distance from the main square, there are also several paid parking garages.
