In the footsteps of the world's oldest pipeline. This picturesque trail leads along the historic brine pipeline from Steeg via Bad Goisern and Bad Ischl to Salinen Austria AG in Ebensee. Exciting information about salt, wood, water, and culture awaits along the way. Short detours from the trail, such as to nearby museums or natural monuments, are highly recommended and encouraged!
Thanks to public transport connections, individual stages can also be tackled (Steeg – Bad Ischl – Ebensee). Using the QR codes directly on the panels, the content can also be listened to as an audio file in German and English.

The trail starts at the boat station/bus stop directly on the main road in Steeg/Bad Goisern. From here you walk through the picturesque forest above the power station. You follow the path past the Steeger Schießstatt through the villages of Ramsau and Gschwandt to Weißenbach.
Now continue in the direction of Lauffen. A short detour to the “Wild Lauffen” is worthwhile here. These rapids in the Traun used to be a major obstacle to shipping.
This is followed by the “Engleiten” section to Bad Ischl. The path leads above the road past the “Kaiser Jagdstandbild” to the Bad Ischl ski jump, where there is an active borehole probe, which is explained on a display board. Turn right here and you will reach the racecourse in Bad Ischl.
There is an information board and an overview map on the “Rennbahn distribution station” building. This is also where the brine extracted in Bad Ischl is collected and forwarded. Follow the esplanade to the former salt works “Sudhaus Bad Ischl”. This is where the "cimentation" is still located today, where the brine pipes from Hallstatt and Altaussee are combined.
Continue to the train station and over the Steinfeldbrücke bridge towards the sewage treatment plant. After the sewage treatment plant, cross the bridge and follow the footpath next to the main road to the "Kößlbach" bridge. Here you switch back to the right-hand side of the Traun and follow the road, which soon turns into a gravel forest road. At Langwies station, cross the Traun again and turn left after around 100 meters.
The path runs along the edge of the forest above the main road to the "Mitterberg distribution station". From here, the old brine pipeline continues straight ahead, but you branch off to the right, cross the main road and follow the path to the salt works in Ebensee. Here, the Ebensee visitor center is the last stop on the trail. The bus stop "Lahnstein/ Traun - Gewerbegebiet" is very close by.
The historic brine pipeline trail is closed from late fall to spring due to the natural conditions. An active inspection is carried out in spring to restore the safety of the path.
